I have windows xp media and my anti-virrus is pc cillan. I had previously been able to access System Restore by right clicking on My Computer, then clicking on Properties, then on the System Restore tab presented as part of System Properties. I had been wrestling with trying to load mbam and your trick of renaming worked fine and the program installed.

I took great encouragement from the fact that your suggestion cured the problem with your own two computers and with the two computers owned by Yavben and VVC, but it was HD errors cause a lot of weird problems, and it's safe, you can't hurt anything with it.
